DESCRIPTION
Application
Glycine has been used as a component of the viral extraction mixture for adenovirus viral extraction.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Glycine is a non-essential amino acid. It is involved in the synthesis of purines, serine and porphyrins. Glycine-gated channels mediate the influx of calcium through cell membranes. It also acts as a competitive agonist for glutamate in binding to the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors. In cancer cells, the synthesis of glycine might be increased due to increased demand for the amino acid.
Inhibitory neurotransmitter in spinal cord, allosteric regulator of NMDA receptors.
